Good Evening.
We have made it to our new destination. It is only a couple of miles from our last spot, but we are on a public lake approximately 50 acres in size, and not the river anymore. The decision was made to pack up at midday yesterday, which was a difficult one to make as it was raining at the time. Needless to say, we stuck to the task of packing up wet gear into our boats, and made the short journey downstream to the vans. It was not pleasant and it would have been nice to stay at the paradise swim we had made ourselves, but we both knew the river would rise fast after the rain, and we were in danger of being flooded out if we stayed any longer. What made it more of a hard choice was Lee had an absolute belter of a run as we decided to pack up. The fish shot downstream and charged through something and sadly the hook pulled.
The journey back to the van in the boats, was typically when the heavens decided to open the most; it chucked it down. The dogs were in Lee’s boat and they howled as we made our way back to our start point. It was difficult not to laugh at this point at the two dogs stood in Lee’s boat wailing away to their hearts content, so we both joined them in their vocal activity, and to an onlooker it would have looked like we had lost the plot! We decided to moor up at a point, slightly further upstream, to make getting the boats up the slippery bank a lot easier. I failed to mention to Lee that the dogs like to jump off the boat as you near the shore! They did, and both got a big surprise at the water’s depth. We now had two soaked dogs to add to the mountain of wet tackle we had to lug up the muddy bank. It seemed like the best decision to leave the river, but it was one hell of a job.
We arrived at the new place in the evening shortly after 6pm. It is a very long lake used for water sports. We liked the look of it immediately and drove up the top end of the lake. As we parked up, a black car pulled up along side us. A guy who looked like he just got off the Marine boat stepped out of his car, and from the offset, he was very hostile towards us. He too had turned up to fish, and he told us immediately that it was no night fishing. What was he doing here then? He then offered to take us to another lake, as there were no carp of any size in here; they had all escaped into the river!! We politely declined his offer and told him we were staying put. We drove a small distance further down the lake and found a nice swim to set up from. Suddenly Brutus (his name for the blog) turned up and told us he was fishing from the other side, and under no circumstances were we allowed to fish here. He stood around for a while and then drove off with his wheels spinning in the mud. Shortly afterwards we saw him setting up on the other side, after he had obviouly gained access through a private barrier, which says ‘No Entry’.
We watched him for a while, and suddenly he started shouting swear words at us in French, then proceeded to take his shirt off, to reveal biceps the size of my thighs, and started coming across the lake towards Lee and I, in his boat. He clearly was not a happy chappy, so I went to get the dogs from the van, just to be on the safe side! He actually warned us off the lake, told us that there was no way we were fishing in this area, and he would do us harm if we tried. What a pleasant guy!
Lee and I decided to go and get a pizza at the local village. We thought it best to sleep in our vans as it was now late, and we would assess the situation in the morning. It was the best thing to do, and we both tried to eat without choking, as we laughed about the strange character that we had just encountered. He clearly had something to hide about what is in the lake, and if anything it fired us up for the morning. We could not wait to get started.
My reception is pretty bad at the moment and I am shattered. We are now set up and I will be back tomorrow to write a post in more detail, complete with some pictures.
Good Night.
