Happy Days!

February 23, 2010

Good Evening

The rods are all out, I am all set up, the dinner is going on shortly – everything is cushti! The day has gone very smoothly and we left the other lake just after first light. A journey of approximately 70km was covered, and after a quick detour, (so one of the group could pick his petrol engine up from his house), we arrived at the lake just after 11am. I am fishing with two friends incidentally and they are situated about 100 yards further up the bank to my right. The lake we are now fishing at is a huge lake and it has a very good head of carp to just under 30kg, according to known results. It is very popular with anglers from all over Europe and although I am not going to give away the location, it is a super looking water.

I was extremely glad I had loaded all of my equipment back into my van and boat yesterday afternoon/evening and slept in the van, as heavy rain fell last night and Danilo and Christian both had a job on their hands this morning, packing up in the drizzly dark. I did not envy them at all! Christian has fished this lake several times before and caught several nice carp to over 20kg. It was him who suggested we move to this lake after the problems we encountered yesterday. Italy has many rules and regulations and organisations and every region can be very different. It is not as straightforward as just picking a lake and arriving to fish if you are a visitor, as some public lakes can have many obstacles and funny rules to adhere to. I have already decided that France is a more straightforward country in which to fish, but I have to say I still prefer Italy as a whole! It is a case of ‘if you know some Italians it makes life much easier’!

With the aid of Christian’s big, handmade, steel boat, and 5hp engine, we were soon all loaded and ready to go to our swims. Christain and Danilo went to their swim first and I prepared all of my material by the loading area and waited for him to return along with my inflatable. It was only a short distance to travel, but with the dogs and extra equipment that I carry, to write the blog etc… it made life very simple, and after yesterday – just what we all needed. By 2pm I had my two Trakker shelters erected and everything put away – just how I like it, and this left about 4 hours to get my rods set up and in position. There is a river bed about 150 metres from the bank and I am focussing my attentions on this feature for the first night. The lake was quite choppy so it meant critical boat work,  like studying the lakebed intently with the echo sounder, could not be carried out. I will be up early and hopefully able to take advantage of a flat calm surface, and then I can have a really good search around my swim water for any features that look desirable.

There has been a lot of rain in this part of Italy very recently and therefore the lake’s water is a lovely colour. I am using Dynamite Bait’s Mussel and Oyster boilies and I am using pop ups, all tipped with some colour. Tonight is more of a first night experiment and I will be able to give you more information in tomorrow’s post.

That’s all for tonight.

Cheers

Plan B

February 22, 2010

Good Evening.

Unfortunately everything has not gone according to plan today and tomorrow morning we are leaving very early, and heading to another lake not too far away from here. The reason for the sudden move is due to very recent changes in the rules affecting carp fishing. To put it simply they no longer seem to want carp anglers at this lake any longer. I won’t bore you with the details but basically we had started to set up and someone then arrived and explained that is wasn’t possible to fish. Everything is loaded back into my van and boat and it does now mean another night sleeping in my van. Tomorrow is another day though, a new water awaits and a new adventure is on the horizon.

See you tomorrow.

On The Move Again!

February 21, 2010

Good Evening.

This is a brief post to inform you all that I am on the move again. I am currently sat in a service station taking a quick break from the driving; I have 142km left to drive and I will sleep across the seats of my van tonight and wait for my friend to turn up at 10am tomorrow morning. No more carp were caught from the Gin lake – I named it for its clarity!

No takes came through the night or early morning so I wandered over to see if the fish were milling around in the usual spots. I amusingly noted that only my pop up remained in the spot I dropped it on yesterday evening and the rest of the pellet had been snaffled. I now think I would have been better off using a piece of pellet as a hookbait and when I return to this lake I will certainly try this approach on the static rods.

I had another go at the stalking and I did try pellet as the hookbait, tipped with a piece of yellow pop up corn to help me see it on the lakebed. I dropped it carefully by a snaggy tree and hid out of the way. I flicked five pieces of pellet near my rig and sat back and waited. Very soon I had four or five very nervous carp sitting right underneath me and I could see them in amongst the branches of the snaggy area. I was given a confidence boost when one of them seemed to take an interest and starting mouthing the lakebed three inches from my hookbait. It was another frustrating saga and I waited till 12.30pm before walking back to my swim to begin packing up.

The packing up went very smoothly and by 3pm I was done. I just had to have one more go at the stalking and I had deliberately left out my landing net, my rod, and my waders and camera. I put the dogs in their cage and crept back to my spot. To show how cautious these carp are, the remaining five pieces of pellet were still visible. Even in my absence they still hadn’t plucked up the courage to take it. I watched for a while and dropped my hookbait in a slightly different place, closer to the snaggy hide. My rod was placed in a way, so if a carp did take the bait, I could pull it away from the snags from the right hand side. That was my plan!

After twenty minutes the same small group of carp from this morning appeared and drifted back under the tree beneath me. The light was now obscured and the sun had dipped behind some trees so visibilty wasn’t great. I could tell the final moment of glory was not forthcoming and I called it a day. They showed no interest and disappeared, along with myself.

It is possibly too early for a feeding frenzy and I think the carp are still waking up a little at this lake. They did seem to be swimming with a slower pace today and the fact some were trance-like under the tree suggested they were still feeling the effects of the cold water. I will probably return to this lake for another go in the summer as it is a lovely little place and I think it could produce some beautiful carp. I would love to catch one of the grass carp too!

So…I am now setting off again. The blog will return tomorrow evening with a new update of the new lake. I can’t wait!

Cheers
