Where Has That Week Gone?

November 26, 2009

Good Evening.

I can’t believe how quickly this week has flown by. It is true what they say: “Time does fly when you are having fun!” Tim and Steve are heading back to England tomorrow for the winter carp society show at the weekend, and that will leave myself and the dogs on the lake. I have a feeling that I too may call it a day, as I have lots to prepare before I leave for Italy. You may think it is just a case of throwing a few extra items in my van, loading up my boats and then hitting the autoroute? That would be nice but with so much equipment to carry and some items to leave behind, and with crucial space limitations, everything has to be planned and packed carefully and there is no margin for error. It would be great to think I could just turn up at my intended destination and set up and start fishing, but that also won’t happen. Permits need buying, fishing and boat, and I need to sort out the all important internet connection. Without it there will be no blog, so as my readers, you will all understand how important that piece of the jigsaw puzzle is. Italy will be fantastic, believe me, and I want you all there to join my adventures.

"X" marks the spot!!

I have a beef casserole on the go at the moment. By the time I have finished this post the meat should be tender, so once again I am working to a schedule! No more fish have been caught and that just leaves tonight for everyone. How often do you hear that so and so caught one on his last night. It often happens and I am really hoping someone latches into one of the big ones; me or whoever!

I did have a small, one beep incident, on one of my tree line rods at around bite time this morning; 10.30am. I was reading the recent Carpworld that I had sent here, and whilst lying on my bed there was a definite knock. I used to get this sometimes in the summer and it was either a liner or a pick up. Needless to say nothing happened so after thirty minutes of waiting by the rod, I reeled it in to check and everything was as it should be! It is better to be safe than sorry though, leaving out a bait that potentially is stuck on the hook for example. I have left the two open water rods where they are for the final night and the snag rod has had a perfect recast and a small introduction of freebies over the floating nugget that rose to the surface after the cast.

Tomorrow morning I will be up early and will be sitting on the rods. You just never know what is going to happen in the next few seconds in carp fishing. That is why I love the sport so much. I think I mentioned this in my short write up of the river Lot. One minute you are sat reading a magazine by the rods and the next you are in the middle of the river, in your boat, getting dragged around by an angry mirror carp. Spontaneous and exhilarating all rolled into one.

Darkness has completely fallen while I have been writing this post. I have been enjoying the nights this week combined with a little reading, a little writing and plenty of sleep. The sleep has certainly been the best part! I finished Flash’s jacket repairs today whilst sat by the rods and he got rather excited when I went to put it back on him. I think he had missed his winter warmer and I had forgotten how daft he looks with it on! He then went off and came back with a small stick and gave it a good chew as if to say thanks!

Step one: Hold the stick between your paws.

Step two: Chew stick to loosen bark

Step three: Strip of bark with teeth.

I don't think it tastes very good!!

There will be a couple more posts before I leave for Italia and then there may be a slight delay till the blog returns. I will inform you when this will happen and put some good links on the homepage so you can read some good stories in the meantime.

My dinner is now ready. Fingers crossed some carp may eat a little tonight too!

Catch you soon.

Raining At The River.

Good Evening!

Hey ho! It’s a jolly old life at the river and hard work too. The one thing I noticed the first time I ever carp fished on a river is how tough it can be. This is the biggest challenge of river carping. So many things throw themselves at you and the fun part I guess is overcoming them and catching a carp. The Czech guys further upstream are doing quite well. They are catching a small handful of carp each night, but by the look on their faces you would not believe it, because they are all average river size. The average size here is small for the ‘average’ French carp I suppose. Anything between 8-12kg is the norm and they have so far caught carp between 8-12kg. “At least you are catching,” I said. “Be happy about that!” It is no surprise to me that the angler out of the pair of them who is catching the most is the one who is fishing on the upstream side and practically all the fish are coming to his left hand rod. This happened to me the last time I fished here, and every time I moved a rod further to my left, it was this rod that caught the carp! A pattern is emerging and I like it! I will certainly be moving into their swim when they depart as it was my intention to fish there anyway, but in the meantime…..

I must persevere in the spot I am in and I have to say I am feeling confident of a carp very soon. The carp never seem to feed in the day here and the only action I have ever received was at night and very early in the morning before it got light. The rain is a big plus and I think tonight could be the night, but please don’t hold your breath! I am enjoying being here, which is the main thing. I am working hard though and the bait is going in regular as clockwork, as planned, and I am having to recast the rods every few hours due to the clinging debris that catches your lines. The raised rod tips are working to fend it off for a while, but eventually a small piece collects which then seems to attract other bits and before you know it you have a floating mass of weed, sticks and leaves pulling on your line.

Expect it fishing on rivers.

Expect it fishing on rivers.

I am playing around with some coloured pop ups to try and see if that makes any difference tonight. I am using a snowman set up and switching the pop up to see if one colour will work better than others. I am a strong believer that when you are fishing you don’t need the same hookbait as your main feed. If the carp are there they will pick up your bait out of curiosity or because they are simply on the munch anyway.

Someone came to see me yesterday. An Austrian angler going by the name of Dominic rowed two kilometres upstream and we had a little chit chat like you do. He reads my blog from time to time and particularly liked it when I was fishing at Cassien. “Don’t you get bored fishing everyday,” he asked me? That is a really good question and maybe he should have read the blog earlier in the week!!! Motivation is my biggest problem and trying to keep the enthusiasm levels running when the carp are low in the tank or the weather is rather miserable! These are the periods I find the most difficult part but as long as I have nice food to eat, some writing to do, and an internet connection; then I am sorted. I like to watch DVD’s in the winter and I like to spend a bit of time cooking. You never know when that run is coming and a sudden hit of fish makes you suddenly appreciate the quiet times, when you can at least sleep and have a few moments to regain your thoughts. I was never under the impression that fishing for five whole years was going to be easy, but then I have always loved a challenge and I like the bar to be raised high as the feeling of accomplishment is far greater.

Stringers at the ready...in case it kicks off!!

Stringers at the ready...in case it kicks off!!

This winter I will have plenty to keep me busy as I will be starting to write lots of extra ‘unseen’ material for my first book. This will be part one of my travels and adventures to date, and it will be out next year sometime. Angling Publications will be handling everything for me and it is something I am really looking forward to. The blog is a book in itself. I had a nice comment today from someone who said I put a lot of effort into writing it. The blog is my baby and I am very proud of it. The fact I have so many readers just highlights that I have achieved what I set out to do. To bring you a diary of a carp angler with no frills attached.

Tomorrow is TWP and I now need to eat some dinner. The dogs eat at 6pm and are now snoozing on their bed. They appreciate all the comments they get too, so keep em’ coming!!

Cheers for now.

Sitting Back And Relaxing.

Good Evening.

The first person I would like to mention tonight is my Mum! My mother is my biggest fan and I know she reads the blog. I get a copy of International Carper sent to my parent’s house every month so they can follow my monthly piece, but the blog gives my Mum an idea as to where I am in Europe and what I am up to. She can also see I am okay. Mum I am fine and well. Also…

I would like to thank everyone for the many messages that have been posted on the blog the last couple of days, but I would also like to remind you “To keep it clean!” However strong you may feel about certain things please remember to choose your words carefully and try and avoid any rude or offensive swear words. I know many young people read the blog and it is very important that the blog stays healthy and clean! I am not being a prude and I will admit, I often swear when I speak, but I try to keep it out of my words (sorry it is the ex-teacher in me)!  I can edit and clean up any comments I receive and sometimes I will make grammatical and spelling corrections, especially if the comments are from non-english speaking readers, who I have to say, usually make perfect sense. If you don’t however, I do know what you are trying to say and I hope you don’t take offence to me changing your words occasionally, as it is only done so everyone can understand your comments. Here endeth the first lesson!

The rods are now out! Tonight is more of a token gesture really as I have had a relaxed day setting everything up and there is no rush. My first job on moving into the free swim, after two Dutch guys departed, was to clear lots of rubbish that I hasten to add, was not left by the two friendly Dutch guys!! There was a mass pile of bottles and other garbage in open view, behind the swim, and I can not fish when I know that kind of thing is sitting there. It is now bagged up and will be disposed of as soon as possible. Broken glass is not one of my dogs best friends either and I could do without a trip to the vets for a cut pad. Speaking of vets I finally got my PetPlan insurance money back the other day from Flashs’ operation in August. It took a while but they came good in the end. If you travel with an animal or just own a pet; insurance is very advisable and I do thoroughly recommend PetPlan. They cover you in any EU country and this includes travel. I have had mine insured since they were puppies and although the premium has gone up every year, I have certainly got back what I have paid out over the years for expensive medical treatment. Flashs’ operation cost 1450 Euros incidentally and that was my emergency kitty gone!!

I have had more than enough rubbish in the last couple of days!!

Good news for the Czech guys is they caught 4 carp last night to 13kg. They were very happy this morning when I woke up and I shared a breakfast with them. Bacon and eggs and a strong coffee, always goes down well first thing! These guys are fishing upstream from myself and I know that is where I would rather be, but I will have to make the most out of my swim and if anything it will make the session very interesting. I do believe on this stretch of river that the carp move downstream at night and they seem to prefer the inside margin for some reason. I will have to try and draw the carp further down to my patch and tomorrow I will be starting my plan which is to bait up with some halibut pellet and corn, to get the small stuff interested and then top this up with plenty of Dynamite Baits boilies. I will keep the bait going in at lunchtime and throughout the night and if I catch I will obviously top up the swim. I am only casting a short distance from the bank and am using stringers. It is fairly easy fishing as it goes. I have my boat with me but this will only be used if I need it for a fish, or to free a snagged rig.

The weather has turned rather mild again which is great. I slept under the stars last night and thank you Trakker for making such good sleeping bags and covers! The mild weather also means the fishing should improve vastly. It rained this afternoon and I like it when it rains when I am fishing rivers. The last guys who have fished this swim have caught very little and I put that down to the weather and quite possibly they had someone set up further upstream. I will find out more about my theory over the next few days.

I seem to have gained a new pet. Any ideas for a name?

My two lovely dogs are very happy again as they are back with their Dad in the big bivvy. At the Orient I gave them their own one to try to keep the mud and dust to a minimum. In all honesty the mud wasn’t an issue as it wasn’t that bad where I was set up.

That is all for tonight folks.

Catch you tomorrow.

Jake and the dogs.
