Happy Easter!

April 4, 2010

Good Evening.

I am not a particularly religious man but with the abundant rain that has fallen from the skies, and the fact it is Easter Sunday; I thought I would include this parable from the bible. At the moment it seems rather apt!

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him. The lord then directed all of this rain to a large lake in northern Italy, where Jake and the dogs are fishing!!

February 2009 in Aviron at Cassien.

I remember sitting through eight days of solid rain in Aviron, at Cassien last year. It was a miserable and wet experience (I even shouted at the heavens for it to stop at one point!), yet just as I am now, all you can do is try to get through it, and keep your spirit’s high, and your mind focussed. The lake has obviously risen a few inches and if it rises any further then I will be in serious trouble. Fortunately the rain that has fallen non-stop since yesterday is not too hard; it is just persistant. This in turn means that the rain water is not flowing through the forest with such a force as before, after a few of the torrential downpours I have endured.

It's a cracker!!

How many of you fell for my chicken egg wind-up yesterday? Come on, be honest, I got you didn’t I?! It was my belated April fools joke for all of my readers to tie in nicely with the ongoing Easter theme, just to show you all, that despite the conditions, I do still have a sense of humour. The unusual bird I saw was not a wind-up though, and in fact is a black woodpecker. I have not managed to get a good shot yet, so I have posted a library picture.

One of these birds was five metres behind my bivvy yesterday!

I am currently on bucket and sponge duty in my sleeping bivvy because the water is coming through the pathetic ground sheet that Mr Nash decided to use on the Double Top Extreme MK2 bivvy. Why am I using it when I am with Trakker? Well I have already explained a week ago that I am waiting for my Colossus to arrive and until then the dogs and I need a big shelter for these long sessions. One common problem I have noticed with ground sheets in general, is too many of the manufacturers make them with a join in them; a stiched join I might add; and where will the water come through – the stiched seam of course. Trakker have managed to find a source for a wider roll of their groundsheet material which ultimately means their groundsheets will soon be one piece. One piece groundsheets – one step ahead!

The great thing to take out of this soggy situation is I could get a run at any moment. My faith is strong (Amen) and with the continous rain and the muddy water that is trickling into the lake, the carp may come into the margins searching for food at any time.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Jake and the dogs.

It’s Saturday!!

bloglogoblack9

I really have no clue what day it is when I am fishing! Even though I have been writing the blog for a few days now, I had to check to see what day it was today! I had my last fish on New Years Day, the 59lb mirror, and now it is the 10th of January. The days have literally flown by and i have not noticed one bit. I think this is partly down to the fact I had some problems with the early blog. When I am fishing days just seem to pass by like leaves in the wind…

There was no action last night. I did not hear any alarms going off in my vicinity. But, I got a good nights sleep which was needed. In fact I think I slept for 11 hours!

I have put a solar panel in my van today, connected to my battery. This will provide a small trickle of charge that will stop the battery going flat. A problem sometimes when you are leaving a vehicle parked up for days. Providing you have the panel connected through a regulator you can leave it connected the whole time you are away. The regulator prevents overcharging, and also stops the battery discharging itself through your solar panel!!

Saturdays for me, are normally a sorting out day. I generally make sure things are charged up, like my camera, video recorder, shaver etc.. I also normally give my bivvy a spring clean. As I have two dogs in there most of the time, when they are not outside sunbathing, or playing, the dust and dog hair builds up quickly. When you are doing extreme sessions, it is important to stay healthy and having a clean bivvy is first and foremost. I will also have a shower today! I don’t bother so much in the winter, as you don’t sweat too much! My general rule of thumb is…when my dogs don’t come near me-I need a shower!!

My food supplies are starting to run a bit thin. I am now down to my emergency supplies. No treats left, like chocolate biscuits. Just tins of tuna, potatoes, eggs, sauces, pasta etc.. I normally do a supermarket run once a week. I shop at Lidl or Aldi because it is cheaper, and there are a lot more of them outside of the UK. The food is exactly the same anyway, I guess there is less choice. I generally try and spend no more than 50-70 Euros on my weekly shop. this includes 10kg of dogfood too! I always buy fresh products as a rule, but occasionally I mix tinned with fresh food if I am being creative. I will have to rely on my emergency rations till I can get to the supermarket.

My van is temporarily still stuck in the mud at the moment. I am parking it behind the swim in the rowing club compound. Last year the ground it was parked on was always soggy after rain, and it got stuck a few times. As soon as there was a day of sunshine which baked the ground, I could get it out no problem. This year there is a big patch of level concrete where my van was parked last year. It’s as if they knew I was coming! This is excess concrete from some posts they put in around the car park. However the other day I tried to get out to get some food and it had been raining. I got ten yards and got stuck! I managed to reverse the van back onto some of the concrete but now the front wheels are stuck in the mud. I have a shovel and will have to resolve it today.

Although I am happy with my rods, I think I will have a look out in the boat today. It is strange but the lake topography seems to have changed a little since last year. I don’t know if it is because the water levels were low for a long time, but I am seeing very different images on my echo sounder to what I remember last year in the spring.

Some good news for myself and the dogs is we are finally getting our new bivvy sent from Nash. A replacement for my current Double Top Extreme MK1 2 Man, as I had some problems with this one. Don’t get me wrong it is a good bivvy and has served us well but there are some issues with it, which they have probably rectified in the MK2 version. Hence they are sending me the MK2. The MK1 will now become my stores bivvy, replacing my JRC Sti bivvy. This is a very good, solid little house, but it is now too small for all our needs. Don’t forget I have to store an awful lot of equipment, food, dog food, bait, etc… and I prefer to keep this separate from my sleeping bivvy, as it reduces the number of ‘visitors’ you get i.e mice, and rats on some lakes.

Have a good day and see you all soon.
