A Rogue Canoe, Zigs, and more Videos.

January 27, 2010

Good Evening.

It seems that my pasta dish went down well with most of you yesterday and I have to tell you that it tasted great! I have eaten well during this session and it has certainly made the waiting more durable. The Parma ham that I enjoyed by the fire last night was even better and along with some bread sticks and a little vino, that was my evening meal sorted.

mmmm....

No action came during the night. I woke at 5am and could not get back to sleep however hard I tried; eventually I did and then it was time to get up anyway. I have spent part of the day editing some video footage that I have been meaning to do for some time. The connection on my Internet stick is so good that it means uploading them to YouTube only takes a short while. Go to My Videos in My Media and take a peek at the three latest uploads. The water at Gigantica really is that colour and the footage from Pusiano in 2008 was quite a morning, and a surprise!

As I was sat in my bivvy this afternoon I had a beep on my ATT – the first one for days. It quickly started to go off so I scrambled into my boots and shot out of the door. A yellow canoe complete with canoeist had come in too close and took out two of my lines. I was more disappointed that it wasn’t a carp and after directing him this way and that way, my lines became free and off he went…Pronto! Not even an apology. It was a classic case for shouting: “You should have gone to SpecSavers mate!”

I went out and duly recovered both rigs from their dragged position. It was getting dark as I made my way back with the second rod so I decided to tie up a couple of quick zig rigs, and launched these out into open water as day turned to night. I have not done the foam thing; instead I have gone for a little yellow pineapple pop up on one, and a 20mm Red Fish pop up on the other. I did not have time to tie up adjustable zig rigs with a controller, so one was set at about 3ft and the other one 4ft – from the lakebed and not the surface. Who knows? In the morning I may thank the canoeist next time I see him for doing me a favour!

Another fine meal is moments away...

Being a good chef I saved half of the pasta sauce from yesterday and used it for today’s lunch. Three small loins of pork were fried in olive oil whilst I deep fried some potatoes. The sauce was added to the frying pan once the pork was cooked and it complimented the meat and potatoes beautifully. I have deliberately not shown a picture of the finished dish as I don’t want to make you all hungry. I am staying on the pig tip and tonight’s meal is ribs cooked on the fire!

"Flash, do you like going to kennels?"

I think that is the answer!!

My friend very kindly did a quick search on the Italian equivalent of yellow pages, for a kennel to house my dogs during the Carp Italy weekend. He came up trumps and a good solution has been sourced. I am sure the dogs will hate it, but they have now stayed in kennels in France, Germany, the UK, and soon they will experience the Italian doggy hospitality service. I am finishing my session on Monday and the lovely job of packing up will begin during this weekend. I will then catch up on some writing before Carp Italy begins on the 6th and 7th of February. See the link on the right hand side of my site.

Enjoy the new videos and the rest of your evening.

Cheers

Jake and the dogs.

Bye Bye 2009…Welcome 2010!!

January 1, 2010

Good evening.

Happy New Year first and foremost! I deliberately left my post till late as most of you should be out partying! I am sat in my bivvy, I can hear a sound system behind me playing the trashiest music ever, but I guess Italy’s choice of music for a New Year’s Eve knees up is not as good as their cuisine! I am actually set up at the back of a campsite at the moment. The campsite backs onto the lake but unfortunately the fact you are set up in a campsite area carries with it drawbacks. One I mentioned the other day and that is the fact the dogs are not allowed to roam free, and I also have to pay to be here. I don’t mind paying but I don’t like the fact the dogs are treated as nuisances which is why I will be moving in a few days time. The dogs can then roam freely, they can also guard me in case I have any unwanted visitors in the night, and they can chill out a little as at the moment I know they feel confined to the bivvy. I was told the dogs could be off the lead in the area I am stationed at, but unfortunately Flash has been picking up pieces of food laid out for birds (you can’t blame him!) and this has upset a few people because he has been wandering around, just being his friendly self. I have two amazing dogs that I have had from puppies, they are well-trained, and you all know I love them dearly. In fact my dogs seem to attract more attention than me sometimes and quite often the dogs are recognised first, then the cogs slowly slot into place and someone will ask if I am the guy who writes the blog and has two Dobermans!! Yes I am he!

Tonight’s post is a reflection of 2009. The fishing at the Italian lake I am sitting at is slow, but I don’t mind. I actually feel really good just to be here and part of that reason is because it took longer than I wanted to get here! You can try to plan things but sometimes you are restricted by other parties or happenings. Let’s take a look back at the last year!

January was a slow month for me but signalled the birth of the blog. I was fortunate enough to catch a whopping 26.8kg mirror from Cassien on the first day of the New Year but then things got rather difficult. What is the longest session you have ever done in your life? Well I sat at Cassien twiddling my thumbs for 38 days and nights but it was actually worth the wait!

My New Year's Day Whacker!

February saw some lovely fish and most were caught in minus temperatures. I caught Dragger the famous common at 49lb 4oz and two days later I caught a 54lb mirror. I notched up a couple of other 20kg carp during the month, but Cassien was being quite stubborn. Work had to be done to catch any carp and compared to last year March was quite a funny month.

Would you wait 38 nights for this carp!!

March was greeted with a welcome because I had a few surprises in store. I had endured a two week spell of inactivity that seemed to shroud the whole lake. The odd fish was caught but compared to the previous year the movements of the carp seemed quite different. Finally I broke the spell and some good carp subdued to my patient tactics. The highlight of the month was the capture of the big old grey mirror, caught for the fourth time in just over a year, and at a new weight of 25.4kg. I had a good run of fish in the end in March but the action would fade as quickly as it started. Moving from the river bed to the slopes did the trick and hunches do sometimes pay the dividends.

The fourth time in a year!

April came and I had to go and fish elsewhere. I didn’t have to, but I wanted to! I fished last year in Aviron at the same time throughout April and May but although I knew I would certainly catch more carp, I decided to give my swim up to my good Italian mate Danilo. One good turn deserves another and this guy was hungry for those Aviron carp. I admire anyone who can stick it out for long sessions. People quite often criticise anglers who fish for long periods saying it is inevitable that they will catch carp. Fish a long session yourself, see how you get on! I went to a small lake not far from Cassien for a purpose – to catch one of the big carp in the lake. My timing was off-key though and someone else beat me to it catching a 31kg mirror a week before I arrived. I caught three carp during the week from the low stocked venue and the carp were all out of this world!

40lb 2oz Enchanted Lake April 09'

Probably the most stunning carp I have ever caught!

May saw a new challenge which was the big lake. This was always going to be tough but I struck gold four nights in and a 21kg mirror was my reward. One lesson I learnt from fishing at the lake was the fact location is so important. We found some fish ready to spawn and I was lucky enough to nail one of the original fish that was probably stocked over thirty years before!

46lb Big Lake May 09'

I will never catch a better carp than this!

June was a difficult month. Salagou did my head in and after a short stint on the Lot I ended up seeking refuge at a commercial water called Gigantica. When the carp are spawning it can be a difficult time and with the hot weather it made me realise that June was a tough month for carp fishing!

Flash finally swimming after 7 years!

Salagou was good for teaching Flash to swim!!

July saw me getting stuck into Gigantica. I started getting success in the Tree Line swim and it reminded me how much I like fishing to visible features and snags. I had many a battle with hard fighting carp and landed a couple over 40lbs. I made a quick visit back to the UK for meetings with Dynamite Baits and Trakker and then returned to Gigantica to prepare for the WCC.

A typical Gigantica scaley mirror that weighed over 40lbs!

August was a funny month and my dog Flash was very ill. He was diagnosed with cancer to begin with but fortunately he was okay and an abscess was to blame. The boy did well though and due to his illness I ended up catching a new PB in the shape of a huge mirror called Staples; he weighed 64lbs 8ozs.

Staples in all his glory and my new PB!

September saw the WCC at Madine. It was a superb competition and after the competitors had left I decided to stay on and fish for a week or so. I got lucky and my only carp was a lovely 54lb mirror. Sometimes that is the way it happens and I never have any complaints when it works out that way!

One carp caught and it's another public water fifty!!

October was the time for the Orient. What a challenge but my three-week session was fairly generous and my first carp was a 25kg mirror. I know I could fish there for many years to beat that weight and I suppose that is why I probably won’t fish there again! I got lucky again and although the session was testing I also learnt a few new lessons. The main one was to fish on my own in the future!!

55lb 8oz Orient Oct 098'

I am a jammy so and so!! My first carp from the Orient and it is a lump!!

November took me to the river Moselle and it almost destroyed me! I don’t quite know what it was but I found it really tough. I caught the odd carp but I realised a simple fact and that is not to return to places where you have had a good result in the past as it is only tempting a competition. I fell into a trap and stubbornly stuck it out but in the end common sense prevailed and I returned pale and thin to Gigantica.

Group Nine army carpers pay a visit to Gigantica!

December was probably the most frustrating month of the year as I was just sat around waiting for products to arrive in the post! I finally made it to Italy and I am now fishing and this is where I leave you for 2009. Tomorrow is a new start and 2010 is the year that I hope brings many monsters. We will see!

This is proper winter carping!!

On the whole the year was okay. I am not completely happy with my results but I guess I am comparing them to my first year’s fishing. My aim is to catch ten fifties every year and I achieved that comfortably last year, but this year had many sticking points and irritating months when things did not go according to plan. I am not complaining as I did catch some great fish but my expectations are high and I hope 2010 is a better year.

A 25kg common is my goal first and foremost and Italy I guess is the place to do it. The lake I am fishing at holds a few and my goal is to beat the 23kg common I caught in Italy last year. Once I have done that I will move on to another lake and start another session! The aim will then be to beat that one!

Finally I would just like to say a big thanks to everyone for the support you have given me over the last eleven months of writing the blog. The blog has changed my life really and it has opened several doors and gives me a chance to allow readers to follow my journey. If you have not subscribed yet please do as it only means you get notified when I publish a new post.

2009 has gone…2010 is here!!

The Final Countdown!!

December 13, 2009

Good Afternoon.

The countdown has started. Italy is looming and I know this is all getting rather monotonous and I have been saying the same thing for days but I can now finally see a departure time. One thing I have learnt over the last 22 months is not to rely on other people. Not all but most will either let you down or as I have found out they simply don’t understand that I am trying to keep to some sort of plan. I was expecting a delivery last Friday and as it turns out it is still sat in a warehouse in the UK because it was forgotten about. I am now assured a guaranteed 48 hr delivery service which means I should be off by Wednesday/ Thursday at the latest. Roll on!

The weather has really turned and the cold snap has arrived. It is now minus 1 outside and the wind chill is quite brutal. The forecast predicts minus 12 this week. The weather forecast in Italy is not much better but I am sticking to my plan. I did look at the forecast down at my favourite lake Lac de St Cassien and it is still fairly mild. Cassien always tempts me but I said I would not return till 2012 and as I have spent an awful amount of time there already I have no desire to go back for now. I am such a good liar!!

I am heading to an area in Italy called the Lombardy region. I am not sure whether I will be identifying my exact location when I am set up fishing for my own personal safety. You may laugh but I have fished in Italy before and behind the raw beauty lies a few problems you must be aware of. Tackle thefts are rife on some lakes and in some parts of Italy, I even know of several people who have been robbed or even worse, held up and threatened to hand over everything and I have to bear this in mind. I am going prepared however! My two dogs are my best deterrent and I had no problems the last time I fished Italy, but this time I am taking a few extra gadgets with me, to protect myself, my dogs and my equipment – if I have to I will! Much of it comes down to common sense and not becoming a victim. Keeping on your guard, not trusting dodgy looking characters, and using your resources is the best means of defence. Fortunately, I know a few Italian carp anglers/friends and I know they will be there to help me if I need it. In fact it was these anglers who made me aware of the problems in the first place. I am not trying to put anyone off fishing Italy – just be aware that your expensive carp fishing tackle is ££ signs in some peoples eyes. The UK it seems, suffers from the same problems in some areas of the country so this growing problem is now widespread across Europe but, just be aware that in some countries the problem can be more serious and unfortunately more life threatening.

You may notice on my sponsor section that there have been a couple of recent changes. Firstly I have joined forces with Sonik Sports Limited. Sonik can offer a greater rod choice and an unbeatable service for the forseeable future and I look forward to working with them. One of my concerns on my travels is what happens when a rod breaks. Sonik can have a replacement sent to one of their customers in as little as two days using their Rapidex lifetime replacement service. Just in case you are wondering what I have done with my Mamba XT rods - I had them delivered back to Tony Parker in the UK, there are no hard feelings and he fully understands my situation and needs.

I have also made another big change and I am no longer representing Diem. To prevent any conflicting issues I am now solely an ambassador for Edgar Brothers Outdoor and will be working closely with Carl Miller to launch an amazing range of technical clothing, footwear and survival aids to the carp fishing market. The market is flooded with inferior cheap chinese imitations and it is high time carp anglers were given a better choice. That choice is quite simple – pay more and get the best.  Edgar Brothers Outdoor supply a network of specialist dealers with US brands such as SureFire, Spyderco, BlackHawk and 5.11 Tactical series, Danner Boots etc… This equipment is used by special forces and is therefore built for the job. Now I understand completely that this will not be for everyone’s pockets but there are enough people out there who will pay for quality. How many people do you know who will spend £500 on a fishing reel, but only £50 on a jacket? They then wonder why the jacket lets them down when they need it the most. With the time I spend on the bank and the severe conditions I endure, I need clothing that is not only technical but made of the right materials, boots that breathe and keep your feet dry and warm, and other vital equipment that I know won’t let me down when I need it the most. Carl and I will be recruiting a small dedicated team of hardcore anglers to wear, use, and promote the range of kit…. so watch this space!!

As I said in the last couple of weeks I will not be in a position to write the blog in Italy until I have my internet connection sorted. Just out of interest there are two ways I can achieve this. The first is to use an internet a stick with my laptop that utilises 3G technology or I can use my mobile phone as a modem and connect my laptop through my mobile phone. I don’t have a contract phone to keep costs down to a minimum. A contract phone works out cheaper than pay as you go but that depends on your usage. I rarely use my phone preferring to use my laptop and email. Internet access is becoming cheaper these days and there are now add ons available for pay as you go sim cards to give you unlimited internet access via your mobile phone. The other problem trying to obtain a contract phone abroad is the fact you often need an address or a bank account in that particular country. Whichever option you choose depends on your situation and the length of time you intend on staying in that country.

I am leaving you with some links to past pages on my blog written since January of this year. These are 2009 memorable moments, highlights, captures and events that happened to me. I hope it provides you with enough reading material to keep you going till I return with the blog from Italy.
