Writing, Cooking, Relaxing and Skyping!

March 21, 2010

Good Evening.

A quick check on the weather confirmed my thoughts this morning – the weather is dull and it looks like I will have no sunshine for about a week or so. Words like cloudy, showers, sprinkles, and drizzle, don’t exactly have you rushing for the suntan lotion; but it is still early spring and I will have to be patient! The lake I am fishing at is further North than I have fished to date and is closer to the Alpes, which is probably why the weather is as it is. I can’t grumble though! I am in a beautiful setting, I am fishing, and the weather is at least constant, which can only be good for the fishing.

With regards to the carp fishing I have done diddly-squat today. I said yesterday that the rods are staying put for several days and that’s what will happen. I don’t need to introduce any more bait either, but every couple of days I will introduce a very small quantity of krushed baits, around where I dropped my actual hook baits. Someone asked me today on Facebook whether I had caught anything yet? The answer was no! I am not actually expecting to catch for a few days as I don’t think there are carp here in numbers yet. The lake is also very big and deep in places and I am fishing a shallower part. It may need a slight rise in the temperatures to get fish moving into this part of the lake. I am confident I am in a very good place though and this was confirmed yesterday when another carp angler arrived in a boat to fish this swim. He saw me set up, shook his head in dismay, quickly turned the boat around, and zoomed across the lake to look for another spot.

It's a place to sleep, and a place to work!

Because I know there is a waiting process involved in the session I have had a very productive day. I have written my first piece for a Dutch magazine called Spiegel which is the third article I have written in the last ten days. It now means I am up to date with everything. Last week I wrote my first part of a mini series for the Italian magazine Carpaxtutti, and of course there is my ongoing series No Fixed Abode in International Carper, that had to be taken care of. I don’t think I will be sitting in the sun much in the next few days as it won’t be shining, so I might just write some more to get ahead of schedule.

Overcast weather food..."Perfick," as Pa Larkin would say!

Apart from the writing I have had a little spring clean of my cooking equipment, and I have cooked some lovely food. Today’s dinner had a British feel to it with a beef casserole and mashed potatoes! I have also enjoyed watching my dogs stockpiling sticks from the plethora of wood that adorns the woodland ground. They literally are in doggy heaven!

I mentioned I was having Internet problems at the start of my session. I have remedied this with an extendable bankstick and some gaffer tape! I attached the dongle to the end of the bankstick, after wrapping it in a plastic bag, and with the aid of a USB extension cable, I now have a pretty good reception. I think the trees in the woodland are the problem and having the dongle a few feet in the air seems to have done the trick. As a test I tried Skyping a few people this evening; the reception was crystal clear which is always a good sign. Skype is fantastic and I was on the phone for over an hour to the UK speaking to family members and friends. How much does it cost? 4 Euros a month for 10,000 minutes – what a bargain!

It is almost bedtime so I am going to call it a night.

Catch you tomorrow.

Saturday Night at the Pictures!!

March 20, 2010

Good Evening.

The weather today has been threatening rain but it has held off. I have spent the day doing checks and adjustments to the rods. I always like to check after 24 hours into a long session, just to see if there are any nuisance species etc… I got a pleasant surprise on two of my rods as I had bloodworm on the hook and bait. The hump I found yesterday is sprouting new shoots of Canadian pond weed as this was also on the hook of one of the rods. I was sure there was some plant life on this hump yesterday and now my suspicions have been confirmed. Taking this into consideration I think it could be a very good spot as things start to warm up.

After making a few small changes, I am now happy with everything. The rods are now going to stay put for a few days and I think it will be a case of waiting for the fish to arrive. I didn’t put too much bait out yesterday as I was running out of time because the day shot by. Today I took a bucket of boilies out to each area, and using the motor on my boat I quickly delivered a boilie every square metre or so, covering a very wide area around each spot. I did this by driving the boat slowly back and forth in lines using my marker as a central guide. I have done this baiting strategy to try to grab the carp’s attention if they move through in a shoal. The wide spread of bait in three separate areas should keep them busy for a while till one of them finds my hookbait. That’s the plan!

As promised I have taken many pictures today and I will leave you with a few to look at so you can all get a feel for the place. I have a few woodpeckers for company in the wood and every now and then I can hear this loud tap tap tap – it’s fantastic and I will try to get a picture if I can.

Enjoy the pictures and have a good Saturday night.

Good Evening!

It has been another non-stop day and apart from coffee breaks, I have been out in the boat, on my feet, preparing bait, tying rigs, etc… The hard work has been done though, and now it is time to enjoy the fishing. I am now relaxing for the first time in many days and it feels great to know that all the effort in getting here has been worth it. The swim itself is a paradise for myself and the dogs. Access is only by boat, there are no footpaths, no noisy roads nearby, and although some people may find it lonely being stuck in a beautiful copse all on your own, I on the other hand am very happy. I will have some visitors over the course of the session, but I will have the chance to do some additional writing in a tranquil setting, in between hopefully catching some fine Italian carp.

After I had enjoyed a coffee and some breakfast I sorted out my inflatable boat. I installed the echo sounder and transponder and put all the other essentials in the boat. I was now ready to go and look for three areas to fish. I should point out now that I am fishing a lake that is very popular with rowers. About 200 yards in front of my swim there are lanes and lanes of buoys for the rowers, to use for training and competitions. This does restrict the distance you can fish, but I do not think it is a disadvantage. This lake is a fairly typical Italian lake in that the lakebed offers little in the way of features. Apart from sloping gently down to the middle of the lake and then sloping gently back up to the opposite margin, there is not much else to find. I am sure there are some plateaus here and there, but where I am fishing it seems pretty uniform. The margins of this lake look superb however. Imagine a lake lined with reeds – this is it! In the summer it is dense with lilies in certain areas and these are obviously good areas for the carp.

With the above taken into consideration I am focussing two rods to my left and right, along each margin so to speak. To my left I found a very good spot that has many tree stumps on the bottom in a depth of 2.5 – 3.5m. These will surely have food sources on and near to them and I am positive this is a good choice. The depth near to the reeds in the edge is about 1m. This depth extends slowly out for about ten metres reaching a depth of about 3m. At this point the lake bed seems to slope down to about 5m over a distance of about 20m. After this point the slope is almost unnoticeable but it does continue and where the buoys begin I have a depth of 7m.

My right hand rod has been placed on a firm patch where new weed growth is evident. This rod is in a depth of 2.5m and is about 10m from the edge. There is quite a difference in the levels here and it goes very shallow onto a sandy area. There is also a small stream that enters the lake in this spot. I can hear it trickling now as I write tonight’s post. I have my very own water feature!

The third rod, my middle rod, has been placed straight out in front. I have placed this rod at the bottom of the slope from 3 – 5m. I managed to find a very small hump about the size of a table. It probably rises a foot or so and it feels fairly firm. On the echo sounder it looks like there is possibly plant life on top of it? It looked quite an interesting spot, and only time will tell. This spot means I now have three rods covering three different depths which I think to begin with is a wise idea.

As I said in a post a few days ago I am using three different flavours of bait. The rods are spaced a very wide distance apart and this is another advantage as I am now covering a wide area with boilies. The swim incidentally is almost a large bay area off the main body of the lake. I will take lots of pictures tomorrow and show you all. I have not had time today because I have been so busy getting everything set up and in position.

I am now going to cook my dinner which tonight is fresh pasta and fresh pesto with shavings of Gran Padano. No wine as I am having an alcohol free session. During this session I am also going to try to kick my smoking habit, once and for all. I have already made a start as I have bought rolling tobacco instead of the normal cigarettes. This means I smoke far less already as I never seem to finish a rolly. I smoke half and throw the other half away. My challenge is to ween myself off the old nicotine before my 39th birthday on the 15th of April. I know I can do it!

Back tomorrow.
